Welcome

    Key City Kennel Club, Inc. is a non-profit organization and the only American Kennel Club member club in Southern Minnesota.  We instruct people with dogs of all breeds, mixes, sizes, and ages to train their dogs to be good companions.  All of our instructors have trained and shown their own dogs in AKC breed competitions, obedience, rally, and agility trials. They also attend continuing education classes relating to dogs and dog training.

    Coming Soon-New Classes

    Building a Reliable Retrieve- Structured class on teaching your dog to retrieve through food motivation and shaping of natural behaviors. 

          4 week class, $40         Starts May 6      Time 1:00 to 2:00 pm (Register online, contact Sue Erickson with questions)

    Head Halter class--Training with a head halter starting from getting your dog used to the head halter and progressing through obedience exercises. 

           4 week class, $40        Starts May 6      Time 2:15-3:15 pm  (Register online, contact Sue Erickson with questions)

     

     

    Drop-in Classes

    PLEASE REMEMBER TO REGISTER YOU AND YOUR DOG ON OUR ONLINE REGISTRATION!  Rabies certificates are required for each dog over 6 months old.

    The fees for these drop-in classes are $15 per dog, or you may purchase a punch card with 5 punches for $75 or a punch card with 10 punches for $150.  Punch cards can be purchased at the training center.

    CONFORMATION:

    These classes run from 7:15 pm - 8:15 pm on Wednesdays. All breeds and sizes run concurrently. PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP MORE THAN 10 MINUTES PRIOR TO CLASS STARTING. 

     

    RALLY RUN-THRUS

    Rally run-thrus will be weekly at 3:00 pm for Novice & Intermediate on Thursdays.  We also hold classes on Saturdays at 10:00 am for Advanced, Excellent, and Master levels. Rally is an on-going class; you may start at any time.  Dogs must have been in classes to learn basic commands prior to beginning Rally.

    SCENT WORK

    Beginning March 12, 2026 this drop-in will meet weekly on Thursdays with the Novice level meeting at 5:00 pm and Advanced & Up at 6:00 pm.

    • New Registration

      Key City Kennel Club has implemented their new class registration system.  We ask that all new and former students create a new account under the "Client Login" in the upper right corner of our Home page; then create a new account where you can register both you and your dog. 

      We have also added a calendar feature for you to see when our next session of classes starts and/or what other events are happening with our club.

    About Us

    The Key City Kennel Club began out of obedience classes taught by Holly Sue Erwin and Pat Johnson.  They found a group of people in this area who were interested in starting a kennel club.  Holly Sue Erwin and Pat Johnson put on a fun match.  Out of the fun match, came the first organizational meeting with twenty people attending.  Of those twenty, two were officers in the Albert Lea Kennel Club.  Harold McMillen was selected the first chairman.  McMillen selected Vern Nere, John Bolton, and Pat Johnson to draw up the by-laws.  At first, the name of the club was the Mankato K-9 Club.  This first official meeting with the election of officers was held in April, 1967.  The first president of the club was John Bolton.  John Bolton, already a successful exhibitor, breeder, and president of the Italian Greyhound Club of America, provided much-needed experience and direction for the new club.  The new club had its first fun match in the fall of 1967.
